2024 Fashion Trends to Begin Shopping Now
New Year, new clothing. The hottest 2024 fashion trends are already taking form, thanks to spring runway shows and some daring red carpet style—and just when we were becoming bored with our current ensembles.
In 2023, two major fashion trends, Y2K and silent luxury, seemed to contradict one another. The latter favored simplicity over glitz, and investment items over one-season miracles. The other was just enjoyable and nostalgic. So, what do experts (and runways) predict for 2024?
Emilia Petrarca, fashion writer for Substack Shop Rat, thinks that if luxury goods costs stay high, the 'quiet luxury' trend would last longer. "It's just too pricey to take chances on works that you may dislike in five or 10 years. Timeless objects are maybe a better investment." Still, she doesn't believe we're in for a year of boring clothing. contrary to popular belief, "People are interested in trying a timeless sort of elegance or opulence—not just a boring beige minimalism that's perhaps safer."
One safe bet: secondhand clothes will remain quite fashionable. But Petrarca believes we'll move away from the Y2K look. Jenny Walton, author of Jenny Sais Quoi on Substack, shares this sentiment. "I've been waiting to see if there will be a sort of 1920s resurgence, followed by a 1930s long silk bias cut dress resurgence," she goes on to explain. Meanwhile, Walton (and apparently everyone else on Instagram) is swooning over one specific garment. "The only thing I'm focused on is how to get one of those flowing silk Prada dresses from the runway."
Girlcore
Everything is already covered with bows, and we're certain that they will become even more popular when 2024 fashion trends emerge. We also noticed a lot of rosettes, ribbons, and ruffles on the spring runways, which means we're in for a year of feminine, girly fashion. Let's call it what it is, girlcore.
Is Everything Sequined?
The excessive use of sparkle, especially sequins, has been another fashion trend that has been seen on the runways in 2024. Paillettes are no longer restricted to being worn just on New Year's Eve; they may now be worn in a range of places, including inside the office and on the dance floor. Why don't you make this year the best one you've ever had?
The spring runway show for Miu Miu seemed to be a new episode of Gossip Girl (or a glimpse at the students who were actually having fun at Saltburn), whereas the catwalk shows for several other businesses featured models dressed in preppy and athletic fashions. We are excited to play with that laid-back, wealthy feel in the new year by stocking up on striped button-downs, polo shirts, academic blazers, and shoes that are appropriate for the outdoors.
Non-Basic Basics
The coffee-table book CBK: Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy: A Life in Fashion has reignited interest in the late fashion icon's style. "I believe we will move into a '80s-'90s look somewhat adjacent to quiet luxury," Walton says. "Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, who dressed in a very basic and stylish style, will continue to be a great influence. "I also believe that restraint will become increasingly appealing."
C-suite chic?
Some of our favourite fashion trends for the winter of 2023 were power dressing, which is something that we anticipate seeing a lot more of in the following year. Put on a jacket that fits you well or put together an ensemble that is suitable for the workplace, and act as if you have your life under control.
